Meet Andy Bauman
I print, therefore I am.
Hi, I’m the artist behind Cogito Prints. My prints are an attempt to understand my place in a vast universe. Sometimes, when I think about the billions and billions of people that live on earth, I feel small and insignificant. The human race has existed for the blink of an eye on this lonely rock hurtling through space. It can feel hard to make sense of it all, but printmaking brings me a sense of purpose – the knowledge that I’ve created something original and tangible. The name Cogito Prints is a nod to the Latin phrase “cogito, ergo sum”, which means “I think, therefore I am”, posed by 17th century philosopher Rene Descartes. In my case, I print, therefore I am.
Printmaking is an accessible medium that makes it easier for anyone to own original, handmade art.
Linocut is part of the rich tradition of block printmaking, which stretches back thousands of years. It can be done without the use of expensive or specialized equipment. The printmaking process gives an artist a way to create genuine reproductions so that more people can own an original work of art. I don’t make any digital reproductions of my art – each print is individually inked and pressed by hand. Working in this traditional medium connects my present with the ancient past.

Art is a medium to explore the interests and obsessions that feed my curiosity.
When I’m not printmaking, I like to explore the Minnesota wilderness searching for rocks and fossils. I’m inspired by history, geology, paleontology and other sciences that study the evolution of life over time. You’ll also find in my work hints of my love of scary stories, a preoccupation with death, the power of folklore, and a bit of irreverent humor.
